Bewitchedactress Erin Murphy is opening up about the 1995 death of her on-screen mother, Elizabeth Montgomery, following her battle with colon cancer.
In a December 2025 interview on Celebrity Drop, Murphy, who played witch Samantha Stephens' (Montgomery) daughter, Tabitha, said her co-star's death "was difficult." She then explained that what "made it more difficult" was that certain "media outlets reached out to" her instead of her real-life children, Rebecca, Bill, and Robert Asher, likely "out of respect to the family," to comment about her illness.
"They were putting together her obituaries, her in memoriams, you know, weeks leading up to her passing away. So, I mean, that part was very difficult," said Murphy in the December 2025 interview.
She also noted that Montgomery died at the age of 62.
"She was much too young. I'm going to be 62 next year, so the thought of that is just crazy," said Murphy.
She also said that she "didn't know how sick [Montgomery] was" when she had cancer.
"I'd heard about it through her son that she wasn't feeling well. She'd been working on a film and just wasn't feeling well," said Murphy.
Erin Murphy Spoke Fondly of Elizabeth Montgomery in 2022
In a 2022 interview withPop Culture Retro, Murphy spoke fondly of her time working with Montgomery on Bewitched, which had an eight-season run until 1972. She noted that she started working on the show when she was just 2 years old during its third season. According to Murphy, she took on some of Montgomery's personality traits because of spending "so much time together" on set.
"In some ways, I'm more like Liz than like my own mom because it was my first eight years of my life, I was on set," said the actress in the 2022 interview.
In addition, she described Montgomery as "smart and hilarious and beautiful." She also said that while she didn't have the closest relationship with Montgomery after Bewitched ended, she's still friends with her children, whom she shared with her second ex-husband, Bewitched director William Asher.
