Liam Rosenior was officially dismissed as Chelsea head coach on April 22, 2026, following a short and underwhelming tenure that lasted just over three months.

The decision came after a 3-0 defeat to Brighton, marking a historic low for the club as they endured their worst goal drought in over a century.

Rosenior had struggled to maintain the tactical momentum left by his predecessor, Enzo Maresca, reportedly losing the support of the dressing room as the team drifted away from Champions League qualification spots.

The club has appointed former U-21 manager Calum McFarlane as interim boss to lead the squad through the final weeks of the campaign.

Chelsea currently sits in 7th place in the Premier League table and is shifting its primary focus toward the FA Cup. McFarlane's first major challenge occurs tomorrow, April 26, when the Blues face Leeds United at Wembley in the semi-finals.

John Obi Mikel Raises Leadership Concern at Chelsea

Addressing the club’s current situation, former Blues midfielder John Obi Mikel said that the young players in the squad are lacking a clear sense of direction during the heat of a match.

He explained that the young players needed someone to direct them in the matches.

"The young players need some sense of direction during games because if you've not been in games, tough games, difficult games, big games, you don't understand how it feels because sometimes the ball is going past you, you don't know what you're doing,” he said.

He emphasized the necessity of having an experienced head on the pitch to tell teammates, "Calm down, I'm right next to you. We'll figure a way. Just follow my lead."

Reflecting on his own arrival at Stamford Bridge as an 18-year-old, Mikel credited his development to the legendary figures who stood right next to him.

He recalled how, when the pace of the game felt overwhelming, he relied on a core group of veterans. "When you have the likes of Frank Lampard, Makélélé, Michael Essien, Didier Drogba, these guys right next to you, JT, they can say 'All right, stick with me, we'll figure it out. Let's just soak up this pressure and then when we have it, then we can play.'"

Most importantly, Mikel expressed deep concern that the current Chelsea dressing room lacks that same level of accountability and leadership.

"There's nobody there that can say something to each other and there's nobody that can grab each other on the throat and say 'Wake the [expletive] up!' Nobody. Nobody." He concluded that the club has fallen into a dangerous culture of "acceptancy," where the competitive fire of the past has been replaced by "a team that just accepts losing."
