Nick Reiner made his first court appearance following the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, while wearing a garment given to inmates on suicide watch.
During his first court appearance since being charged with the murders of his parents, the 32-year-old son of the *Stand By Me* director wore a sleeveless blue smock and shackles, according to PEOPLE. The garment, described as a suicide prevention smock, is intended to prevent its wearer from taking their own life.
Suicide prevention smocks are stiff, thick garments that are typically made of quilted nylon or other sturdy materials that prevent the fabric from being folded, according to PSP Corp, a company that manufactures the smocks. The sturdiness of the material is intended to stop the smocks from being fashioned into a noose.

The garments, also known as turtle suits or safety smocks, have reportedly been used in a number of high-profile cases, including Charlie Kirk shooting suspect Tyler Robinson, Brian Thompson shooting suspect Luigi Mangione, and Jeffrey Epstein confidante Ghislaine Maxwell.
Suicide prevention vests have previously been the subject of controversy. Robinson's defense attorneys argued that the garment can negatively impact the jury's perception of the individual wearing it — essentially claiming that a defendant wearing jail clothes already looks more guilty than if they wore everyday street clothes.
"In the modern age of ubiquitous internet access and unrelenting media attention to high-profile criminal cases," Robinson's attorneys said, per *The Salt Lake Tribune*, "the prejudicial effect of a criminal defendant appearing in shackles, jail attire, and bullet-proof or suicide vests at any hearing threatens fundamental fairness."
