Tim Tebow is mourning the loss of his father, Bob.

The former NFL star, 38, penned an emotional Instagram post on Friday, April 24 in honor of his father, who was 78.

Tebow curated a carousel of photos with his father from over the years, including pictures from milestone events like his wedding to wife Demi-Leigh Tebow. "Heaven ushered in a hero of the faith last night as my Dad was welcomed home," Tebow wrote Friday. "Many will say sorry for your loss but the truth is he’s not lost, we know exactly where he is. He’s home. Forever!"

Tebow revealed in the post that he asked his father "last week what he looked forward to most about Heaven," and Bob "simply said, 'Jesus.'" Bob "couldn't wait to see Jesus face to face," Tebow continued. "Praise God that his wait is over. Death has been swallowed up in victory. He’s healed and whole now."

Tebow concluded the caption: "So we don’t mourn as those with no hope. See you soon Dad!"

In 2016, the former Denver Broncos star opened up about his father's diagnosis with Parkinson's disease in an interview with PEOPLE. "I got really emotional. I mean, this is my dad," Tebow said at the time.

Tebow also shared in 2016 how much he enjoys spending time with his father. "I love being around him," he said. "We watch ball, talk ball. But I also go to him for advice about spiritual questions. There are times where he sees something from a different place than I do."

Bob said at the time that he wouldn't allow his diagnosis to force him to "retire from the Great Commission to spread the gospel" adding, "I may be slower, and I may shake on the way, but I still have work to do."

Bob's work took him all over the world, which inspired his son. After Bob was diagnosed, he returned to the Philippines to visit orphanages, prisons, and the Tebow CURE Hospital, a five-story facility that opened in 2014.

Tebow told PEOPLE at the time: "When you see Dad in a third-world country with hurting people, you're like, 'that's what he's meant to do,'" he says. "It's his most comfortable place to be in the world."
